The Transformative Power of Kundalini Yoga & The Wisdom of Meditation as Medicine

I have been reading Meditation as Medicine: Activate the Power of Your Natural Healing Force by Dharma Singh Khalsa, MD, and it has deepened not only my love for Kundalini Yoga but also my understanding of its profound healing potential. This book has affirmed what my own practice has revealed to me—Kundalini Yoga is more than movement, breath, or meditation; it is a deeply embodied technology for healing and transformation.

My daily sadhana practice has become an anchor in my life, one that moves me to tears nearly every morning. The sheer power of it—of tuning in, breathing, chanting, and moving energy—has cracked open layers within me, allowing healing to flow in ways I never anticipated. It is an experience beyond words, but one that is felt in every fiber of my being.

As an Ayurveda Health Counselor, my work centers on holistic healing—using ancient wisdom, intuitive knowing, and time-tested practices to support the mind, body, and spirit. Kundalini Yoga has now become an essential part of my healing toolbox, something I not only practice personally but also share with my clients and students. It compliments Ayurveda beautifully, addressing the energetic and vibrational aspects of healing in a way that diet, herbs, and lifestyle alone cannot.

A year ago, I wouldn’t have imagined myself on this path—that of becoming a yoga teacher. At that time, my understanding of Kundalini Yoga was limited. I had little exposure to its depth, its lineage, and its scientific approach to self-healing. Yet, one thing I have learned is to trust the universe and the way it speaks—through messages and messengers. When a dear friend, placed on my path by divine orchestration, suggested I explore Kundalini Yoga, something in me stirred. I listened. And now, I cannot imagine my life without this practice.

Meditation as Medicine—A Guide to Healing with Energy and Intention

Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa’s Meditation as Medicine validates much of what I have experienced in my own healing journey. He presents a compelling case for how meditation—specifically the techniques found in Kundalini Yoga—can activate the body’s innate healing intelligence.

The core premise of the book is that the mind and body are deeply interconnected, and that meditation is not just a spiritual or psychological tool, but a medical one. Dr. Khalsa introduces the concept of Medical Meditation, a system that combines breath, sound, movement, and focus to stimulate the body's natural ability to heal. He draws on research in neurobiology, endocrinology, and psychoneuroimmunology, showing how specific meditative practices can regulate the nervous system, reduce inflammation, and even influence gene expression.

Some of the most powerful takeaways from the book include:

  • The Science of Mantra and Sound Healing: Sound is vibration, and vibration influences the body at a cellular level. Mantras in Kundalini Yoga, such as Sat Nam or Ra Ma Da Sa, create specific frequencies that promote healing and balance.

  • The Healing Power of the Breath: The way we breathe determines our mental and emotional state. Khalsa explores breathwork (pranayama) as a direct pathway to calming the nervous system, balancing hormones, and reducing stress-related disease.

  • Meditation as a Prescription: The book includes meditation practices specifically tailored for conditions like anxiety, depression, immune disorders, chronic pain, and hormonal imbalances. He offers practical guidance on how to apply these techniques to daily life.

  • Kundalini Yoga as a Tool for Self-Healing: The combination of movement, breath, and mantra in Kundalini Yoga helps to clear energetic blockages, detoxify the body, and rewire the brain toward healing patterns.

What I love most about Meditation as Medicine is its affirmation that healing is an inside job. The body is already wired for self-repair, and these ancient practices simply activate what is already within us. This aligns so deeply with Ayurveda, which teaches that when we align with nature—both within and around us—our body moves toward balance effortlessly.

Trusting the Path & Embracing the Unknown

Reflecting on my journey, I am reminded that healing unfolds in its own time and way. Sometimes, we are guided to exactly what we need before we even realize we need it. If you had told me a year ago that Kundalini Yoga would become a cornerstone of my daily practice and professional work, I might not have believed you. But the universe always knows.

If you are on a path of healing, seeking something to shift your energy, or longing for deeper self-connection, I encourage you to explore Kundalini Yoga. Perhaps pick up Meditation as Medicine and see if its teachings resonate with you. Be open to what unfolds. Healing is rarely linear, but it is always alive—moving, shifting, and guiding us toward greater wholeness. You can also consider joining me, if local, at my Kundalini classes I will be offering.
